This is a beautiful book about the women of the Therigatha, the first female followers of the Buddha. It tells of their struggles and poems of awakening, as well as how they fit in the society of the time. Some of the stories are absolutely heart-breaking, deep loss and grief and the displacement of women who did not fit in with the patriarchal society of the time. At times I felt myself overcome with their grace and beauty of spirit and the deep love they had for one another.
